Technology Architect Duties and Responsibilities

While a technology architect’s duties and responsibilities are determined by their industry or company, there are many core tasks associated with the role. Based on our analysis of the job, these include:

Define Company IT Business Processes Technology architects start a new project by defining the current business processes their employer follows for IT systems and software. They also identify where those processes can be improved by new technology.

Communicate with Development Teams Technology architects communicate the new technology needs they have identified to the company’s development teams. This also includes communicating their initial ideas so developers can make their own suggestions about how to solve the problem.

Design the Structure of New Technology Solutions Technology architects are responsible for designing the high-level structure of new technology solutions, including the emerging technologies that development teams may use. This also includes planning the resources needed to implement the new solution and identifying potential roadblocks.

Oversee Project Implementation After implementation has begun, technology architects are responsible for overseeing all the moving parts of the project. They ensure different teams are working well together and accomplishing all objectives.

Measure Performance of New System Once a new technology has been implemented, the technology architect is responsible for measuring overall performance and project success. If anything was missed during implementation, technology architects are responsible for correcting the oversight.

Technology Architect Skills and Qualifications

Technology architects are highly technical and keep up with all new and emerging technologies. They are also logical in their planning and invested in creating the most efficient systems possible. Employers hire technology architects with at least 10 years of industry experience in addition to the following skills and qualifications:

  • Specific technical experience – technology architects must possess experience with the technology that the employer specifies. This can range from programming languages to certain types of software
  • Project management experience – technology architects are experienced project managers and know exactly how to lead a project from implementation to completion
  • People management – technology architects are skilled people managers, and they know how to resolve conflict between team members
  • Interpersonal communication skills – technology architects are expert communicators, and they know how to clearly convey their ideas to everyone involved in the project. This includes communicating verbally and through written means
  • Strategic planning – technology architects are strategic in their planning and implementation. They know how to identify key objectives and create a plan based on those objectives

Technology Architect Education and Training

Technology architects need at least a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field. Employers may also consider candidates who have equal experience as technical project managers. Due to the nature of the job, many employers also require their technology architects to possess all relevant certifications based on the technology being used. Check job postings to learn more about any necessary certifications. Technology architects typically don’t undergo extensive on-the-job training due to their industry experience. However, they may receive brief training on current business processes and systems, especially if they are new to the company.

Technology Architect Salary and Outlook

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) files technology architects under the computer network architects category. The annual median salary for this category is around $105,000. Those in the bottom 10 percent of earners typically make around $60,000 per year, while those in the top 10 percent make around $162,000 per year. Technology architects are also likely to receive comprehensive benefit packages including health insurance, retirement plans, and performance-based incentives. The BLS reports a standard growth outlook for technology architects at 6 percent growth over the next 10 years. This projection may increase as companies get closer to replacing outdated systems.
