Director of Admissions Duties and Responsibilities
A Director of Admissions has many duties and responsibilities. Although specific positions will dictate a Director of Admissions’ undertakings, there are several core responsibilities common to this occupation. A review of current job listings identified the following primary tasks and responsibilities.
Recruit Students The coordinating and facilitating of on-campus and off-campus recruiting events may be one of the Director of Admissions responsibilities. This may involve coordinating tours of the campus to potential students, traveling to school campuses to provide students with information about their academic program and creating marketing materials like brochures and pamphlets. The Director of Admissions may take an active role in these tasks or may supervise the staff responsible for carrying it out.
Interview and Evaluate Candidates Directors of Admissions are also tasked with evaluating potential students. They may work with faculty or administrators to create criteria and standards for admission. They may also review applications and documentation for each applicant and in some schools may even perform interviews via telephone or in person. In larger institutions the Director of Admissions will most likely share these responsibilities with the Admissions Office staff, whereas in smaller schools the Director may be tasked with performing these duties themselves.
Oversee Admissions After the Director of Admissions has recruited, evaluated and selected new students their job is not yet complete. The Director of Admissions will oversee the admissions process which may include financial aid assistance, scholarship applications, course enrollment and any necessary registration paperwork. The Director may handle these responsibilities in their office or may direct students to the appropriate office, such as the office of financial aid or the registrar’s office. Directors of Admissions are often the point of contact for new students who may have questions about the school or the enrollment process. They will often spend time answering inquiries via telephone or email.
