Patient Care Technician Duties and Responsibilities

To accomplish their primary goal of assisting Nurses in providing health care to patients, Patient Care Technicians perform many tasks. We analyzed several job listings to identify these core Patient Care Technician duties and responsibilities.

Measure Vital Signs Patient Care Technicians are responsible for measuring the vital signs and monitoring the health of patients. They take the temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiration, daily weights and dietary intake of the patients, and inquire about their health and well-being. In some cases, they may collect blood or urine samples.

Keep Records The Patient Care Technician must accurately record the information they collect on the patient for inclusion in the medical record. They promptly report any changes in a patient’s condition to a Registered Nurse or Physician.

Assist in Basic Needs Patient Care Technicians assist patients with their basic needs, such as eating, drinking, dressing, bathing and personal hygiene. They transport patients to and from other departments as needed.

Educate Patient and Family Patient Care Technicians help Physicians and Nurses in educating patient and family on the nature of the care required and therapies being provided. For this, the Patient Care Technician maintains close communication with Physicians and healthcare team members to understand the patient’s status and needs.
